Thoughts and prayers

So, another big shoot-'em-up in a gun-crazy state. Somehow or other, the presence of heavily amed citizens did not deter the shooter.

Rightwingers -- specifically Attorney General Ken Paxton, than whom you can get no further right -- offered thoughts and prayers.

They never say what they are thinking or what prayers they're offering. I wonder.

"Holy crap, gotta buy me some more guns!"

"Dear Lord, I thank you I don't live in a blue state where the gummint at least tries to keep firearms out of the hands of people whose idea of Sunday services is shooting up a church.

Or what?

Here's a thought of my own. Of the 22,000 people at the Highway 91Festival, 58 were shot to death. But the others are not out of the woods yet. About 200 or so will eventually die of gunfire.

  1. Apparently, some plain citizen with a gun was the one who stopped the mad man.

The truth is, the surprise element will always put the crazies in advantadge. And if he is a tad too smart, like that Las Vegas shooter, it can be a hell of an advantadge.

  2. That isn't the argument of the gun nuts. They say that the knowledge that someone, anyone they encounter will be armed is sufficient to deter killers. Obviously, this isn't so.

    From The Guardian:

The Texas attorney general has stirred up some online controversy about the shooting and what can be done to prevent similar attacks in the future.

Republican Ken Paxton suggested that congregations should be armed so they can take down shooters.

“In Texas at least we have the opportunity to concealed-carry. And if it is a place where somebody had the ability to carry there is always the opportunity that a gunman can be taken out before he has the opportunity to kill very many people.

“We have had shootings at churches forever, this is going to happen again. And so we need people in church to do ... professional security or at least arming some of the parishioners or the congregation so that they can respond when something like this happens again.”

You know where we don't have shootings at churches? Hawaii, where there are enforced gun laws.

Nonsense, Harry. That is purely an invention of your zealotry.

You know where we don't have shootings at churches? Hawaii, where there are enforced gun laws.

You know where else they don't have shootings at churches? Alaska, a shall-issue state, where both concealed and open carry are completely legal.

And Clovis is right, what stopped that lunatic was a civilian with a gun.

Interesting how there are never any mass shootings at gun shows.

  4. And it seems certain that the government was responsible for this guy having a gun in the first place.
