George Orwell comes to Maryland

Bandit visits us from New York

Maryland, where I live, has a new law forbidding the retail sale of dogs, cats and rabbits.

I do not know why these animals are more equal than all the other animals. Or perhaps less equal.

I'm sure that the dogs will prefer being sold, while the cats will be indifferent. I don't know what the rabbits will think.

  1. The bunnies are too busy messing around to care.

  2. Since posting this I listened to a discussion on the Kojo Nnandi Show (a local civic radio program) showed that the legislation was aimed at puppy mills. And, I infer, kitten mills and bunny mills, although I have never heard of a bunny mill. As you say, I don't imagine bunnies would object to that.

I'm opposed to cruelty to animals (and was responsible for the first conviction involving jail time for that offense in the state of Hawaii) but the fanatics behind this bill define cruelty to dogs as giving them less than a quarter acre of space each.

    They lost me there.
