Gun nuts on parade

I visited my granddaughters over the weekend, which meant exposing myself to parts of the culture that I normally don't have any contact with, like television. One thing I saw was going to be fodder for another gun nut post, which now must come later, because overnight an even better -- by which I mean, much worse -- example has come up.

NJ man shoots 11-year-old nephew dead while demonstrating laser sight on his forehead

What more can one say? Plenty, and the online commentariat is saying it. I have picked out a few of the most incisive ones but it is worth reading them all:

More guns mean more people are safe. --The NRA--
and

The NRA would say that if the eleven-year-old boy had a gun this would not have happened.
and

At least they arrested this guy -- they usually call this kind of stuff a "tragic accident."

and

Criminal negligence is a funny thing. Kill someone outside your family and you could get life, but kill a family member and all you will probably get is sympathy.

and (based on the fact that the shooter lived in his mother's basement)

I was mostly making fun of him for being a loser who can apparently afford a gun collection (good-quality new guns ain't cheap), but can't afford to move out of his parents' basement.
I know times are tough for millennials, but, damn, that's pathetic.
I think after every similar episode, the national press should insist that Wayne Lapierre go on record and on camera to explain the NRA version of events. When Lapierre starts showing up every single day, then maybe the responsible gun owners of America (if there really are any) will start joining the don't-need-guns voters to draft some responsible legislation -- like repealing the Second Amendment.

But I am not hopeful because 1) Wayne Lapierre doesn't have the stones to defend his positions when they lead to shooting kids; 2) gun nuts are cowards who are afraid to go unarmed in places where the rest of us move about without a care, and that is why you cannot discuss anything with them; 3) there is an enormous financial sector that profits from stroking the penis substitutes that the gun nuts cannot live without.

Which brings me to the original post this was going to be. The hedline was to have read:

TONS OF GUN NUTTERS' LAUNDRY SOILED IN MASS NOCTURAL EMISSIONS

And the text would have said:

The ultimate in vicarious wish fulfillment for gun nuts has come to "Animal Planet," a reality show called Rocky Mountain Bounty Hunters.

I have not seen the show, only the promo, which explains all -- "Hunting men is the ultimate" (I do not have that exact but that was the sense of it; the picture explains the sentiment just as well.)

All the sicko gun owners will be watching and spasming into their BVDs, and Animal Planet will be raking it in. It would be worth watching just to learn who the sponsors are.

A fair idea of the intelligence of these menaces is given by the promo, which shows them sneaking up on a tent (presumably hiding a fugitive) across a broad, snow-covered meadow, wearing forest camouflage.

A commenter at survivalistboards.com claims to know the show is fake, which is no doubt true; but that does not change the intent of the producers or the intended audience.

  1. You have written some illogical, innumerate, badly thought out, and thoroughly nasty things before, but this might just take the cake. And all the icing.

It is almost impossible to know where to start.

  2. Give it a whirl. I kinda like the idea of bracing Lapierre every time, instead of listening to the NRA whine, now is not the time, emotions are raw, which i heard about a thousand times after the Newtown massacre.

I expect you are bent out of shape by my calling the gun nuts cowards, but what other conclusion is possible when they say they cannot shop in a store or go to a kids' baseball game unarmed?

  4. And this is what happens when you do not allow 13-year-olds to pack heat:

Good thing he escaped from the dangers of post-Bush Iraq, eh?

  5. Give it a whirl.

    Okay.

Your link goes to the wrong place, although I wouldn't be surprised if the veracity is the same, nonetheless.

I think after every similar episode, the national press should insist that Wayne Lapierre go on record and on camera to explain the NRA version of events.

And I think that after every instance of reckless driving, the auto manufacturers should explain their version of events. And for every accidental drowning, swimming pool manufacturers should do the same. And for every knifing, hanging, bludgeoning and electrocution knife, rope, hammer and wire manufacturers should also explain their version of events. And for all the AIDS deaths, GLAD needs to explain their version of anal sex.

    Your hypocrisy is astonishing.

More kids die of drownings than fire arms. Why not go after swimming pool nuts? Way more people die in car crashes than by guns, yet I don't see you going after speed nuts and clamoring for a nationwide 25 mph speed limit. AIDS kills by the millions, yet I don't see you clamoring for anti-sodomy laws.

I expect you are bent out of shape by my calling the gun nuts cowards, but what other conclusion is possible when they say they cannot shop in a store or go to a kids' baseball game unarmed?

This conclusion: this is yet another blinkered, thoughtless, and self defeating proclamation.

Do you wear a seat belt when you drive? Have a smoke alarm in your house?

    Coward.

    And that is just disgusting.

But typical of the kind of incisive thinking and analysis that typifies gunphobes.

  6. 'Why not go after swimming pool nuts?'

Because swimming pools are regulated in most jurisdictions as attractive nuisances, as guns should be; and because there is no giant lobby arguing that it is a good thing to lose a few thousand children rather than inconvenience lap swimmers.

Sorry, about the link. I didn't check it.

  7. Here is a more recent story, giving details about circumstances that had not been revealed when I wrote the original post. Doesn't change anything though.

  9. Because swimming pools are regulated in most jurisdictions as attractive nuisances, as guns should be ...

Goal post shifting again, I see.

Guns are already regulated, far more than pools. Pools kill more kids than guns. Why not take pools away from the pool nuts?

What about AIDS and anti-sodomy laws?

Why not demand a maximum 25 mph speed limit?

I know ... only one of those things gives the individual any power against the collective.

  10. I am not aware that guns are regulated at all.

  12. Well, I cannot easily get a machine gun, but anything else, I go to Arizona and load the truck till my money runs out.

  13. So guns, like pools are regulated in some places ("I am not aware that guns are regulated at all" = wrong).

Clearly, then, you should be pushing to ban swimming pools. And drastically lower speed limits.

(I'm also noting that Arizona's gun laws are now like Alaska's. Which means gun driven mayhem will be breaking out any day, just like in Alaska. Oh, wait ...)

  14. 'You're five times more likely to die from a gun in Arizona than Hawaii.'

That's from an old news story pegged to the Giffords massacre. Yes, gun driven mayhem has broken out in Arizona, and it is not a stretch to think that the gun nut-driven lack of regulation has contributed.

In any event, it is clear that having the populace armed beyond all sense and reasn has not, as promised by LaPierre, made Arizona safer.

  15. Yes, gun driven mayhem has broken out in Arizona, and it is not a stretch to think that the gun nut-driven lack of regulation has contributed.

Wrong. Crime of all kinds is dropping in Arizona.

Arizona crime statistics indicate a total downward trend in crime based on data from 11 years when violent crime was decreasing and property crime was decreasing.
